A Challenging Year for the Olive Harvest, also at Tierralou

A difficult harvest, but still not a lost year

In regions such as Aragon and Catalonia, they speak of the worst olive harvest in 30 years. Extreme drought and high temperatures were already causing major problems, but the abundant rainfall in November did not make things any easier. Roads to orchards became inaccessible and harvesting had to be postponed.

The flooding in recent weeks, which has caused widespread damage in parts of Valencia and surrounding regions, is a reminder of how vulnerable agriculture is to the whims of nature. In the Valencia region, several municipalities have decided to completely stop production in their olive oil mills because of the extreme shortage of olives. ‘Es un desastre total’ (source Huffpost España)

Nevertheless, we at Tierralou are determined not to let this year go to waste. Thanks to a dose of luck, well-maintained and irrigated land, some of our trees are fortunately still bearing, and together with local farmers and their families we are working hard to harvest an acceptable amount of olives.

Although the yield per olive is much lower this year, careful harvesting and selection have allowed us to guarantee that the quality of our oil is superior. The taste, smell and composition of our oil are delicious again this year - a nod from nature that reminds us that quality is not always about quantity.
